Israel: Lithuanian Israelis protest proposed law denying Holocaust involvement

Israel, Ramat Gan

Israelis of Lithuanian origin rallied in front of the Lithuanian embassy in Ramat Gan on Friday to protest against a new law proposed in the Baltic state that denies its participation in the Holocaust.

Protesters held banners urging Vilnius to "take responsibility for the Holocaust" and "not distort history" as they gathered in front of the Lithuanian embassy. At least one protester was seen wearing a yellow Star of David badge.

"95 percent of Lithuanian Jews where murdered by Lithuanian people," protester Arie Ben Arri said. "According to publications known to us, 22,000 Lithuanian people killed Jews. They killed using cruelty not known to be used even by SS officers."

Rosa Bluch, a 91-year old survivor of the Kaunas, or Kovno, ghetto, said Lithuanians "started to kill the Jews even before the Germans arrived."

Arunas Gumuliauskas, a Lithuanian lawmaker from the ruling party of Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, announced in December the drafting of a law declaring that neither Lithuania nor its leaders took part in the Holocaust.

Around 95 percent of Lithuania's 250,000 Jews were killed during the Holocaust, according to reports citing international research about the Holocaust.

In 2018, Poland passed a bill setting fines or a maximum of three-year imprisonment for anyone who publicly states that the Polish nation shares responsibility for Third Reich crimes.
