Germany: 75 years since Auschwitz’s liberation marked by cleaning victims’ memorial stones

A group of volunteers met in Berlin on Sunday to clean the memorial stones of the victims of the Holocaust ahead of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Footage shows the volunteers cleaning and polishing the stones around Graefekiez and Reuterkiez.

A professor who took part said the importance for her was "that it's a commemoration for one person. It's the only project that commemorate[s] one person and not a group."

Another volunteer said anti-Semitism "is rising again, and hate against foreigners - not necessarily Jewish people or people who are different. So I think it's a good daily reminder of what happened and that we still need to be tolerant and that we need to remember what happened 70 years ago and to try to make sure it doesn't happen again."

The memorial stones, known in German as Stolpersteine - literally meaning 'stumbling blocks' - have been placed outside the homes of those persecuted by the Nazis during the Holocaust. They have been installed over the years by artist Gunter Demnig, who laid his 75,000th memorial stone in December.

Auschwitz was the largest and deadliest Nazi concentration camp.

The memorials commemorate victims of the Nazis between 1933 and 1945, not only Jews, but also Sinti and Roma, members of political or religious resistances, victims of the "euthanasia" murders, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses and people who were declared to be "asocial."
