Germany: Polish PM warns against 'misuse' of Holocaust 'for current political affairs'

Germany, Berlin

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki warned against the "misuse" of "this 75th anniversary and its ceremonies for current political affairs," while speaking at in International Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorations with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Monday.

'We disapprove that this truth shall be denied. That the history of the holocaust shall be rewritten. We are adamant that this truth must not be misused, one must rather listen to the quiet and silence. To the silence that six million victims of World War II have left behind' said Morawiecki, during a concert commemorating the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz at the Berlin Opera House.

Poland's government faced strong criticism from countries around the world last year after it passed a law which made it a crime to accuse the country of involvement in Nazi crimes, in a move that was attacked as seeking to downplay Polish complicity in the Holocaust.

"We have to maintain the remembrance, and keep it alive. We must vehemently oppose intolerance and hatred, racism, anti-Semitism and xenophobia," commented Merkel.

Soviet forces liberated Auschwitz on January 27, 1945. Some 1.1 million people were murdered by the Nazi German forces at the site, the vast majority of them Jews. Poles, Roma and Soviet prisoners of war were among the other victims of the camp.
