Ireland: 'We are Brexit-ready' - Deputy PM Coveney

Ireland, Dublin
January 31, 2020 at 16:24 GMT -00:00 · Published

Deputy Head of the Irish government Simon Coveney made an early visit to Dublin port with other government ministers on Friday morning, ahead of the United Kingdom's departure from the European Union.

Coveney, accompanied by Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe and Minister for EU Affairs Helen McEntee, arrived at the strategic port at around at 5 AM local time, and after a short visit addressed the media on Brexit and the future of trade with the United Kingdom.

"It's appropriate on Brexit day to be here in Dublin port, where 60% of everything that comes into Ireland, comes through. That's about 40 million tonnes of product each year coming through the facilities that you see behind me," Coveney said.

"Make no mistake, once the transition period ends, that trading relationship also changes fundamentally and permanently. And that is why we will need very extensive new facilities here in Dublin port, to make sure that the trade coming to and from the UK can be managed in a way that is as efficient as possible," he added.

Coveney went on to explain that the government has invested and made preparations for two years, and that as of today they are "Brexit-ready."

The UK joined the European Economic Community in 1973 and after 47 years it is the first member state to withdraw from the EU.

On January 9, the Brexit bill was approved at its third reading with 330 MPs voting for and 231 against in the House of Commons.
