Spain: Messi throws Barca into disarray after outburst at Abidal

Spain, Barcelona
February 05, 2020 at 15:44 GMT +00:00 · Published

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi trained as normal alongside his teammates in the Catalan capital on Wednesday despite becoming involved in a dispute with his former colleague and Barca's Sporting Director Eric Abidal.

Messi could be seen training on the pitch at the Joan Gamper Sports City ahead of his side's clash against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.

The Argentine made headlines after levelling criticism at Abidal, who had given an interview in which he said the Barca squad had not 'worked hard' under ex-coach Ernesto Valverde.

Messi responded on Instagram asking Abidal to name names to avoid 'dirtying everyone' and telling his former teammate to take 'his share of the blame.'

The rift could potentially have devastating consequences for Barca, with Messi able to walk away from the club at the end of the season thanks to a clause in his contract.

Current Barcelona boss Quique Setien attempted to play down the spat, saying: "Messi has enough experience and ability to decide about the things that he has do or otherwise."

"I'm not going to get involved in Messi's life or anyone's life ... I'm nobody's father," he concluded.

Abidal, meanwhile, is set to meet with the Barcelona hierarchy over his future this week.
