Meet 'Chucho,' the triple amputee goalkeeper overcoming strikers and adversity

Luis Jesus Rodriguez, nicknamed "Chucho," is a 14-year-old boy who has a similar dream to millions of other kids, to be a goalkeeper in a football team. For Chucho, however, who lost both his legs and an arm to disease, his dream may sound more unlikely than for most his age, but that has never held him back.

At the age of just three years old, he was diagnosed with a an illness that led to the amputation of three limbs. "[The disease] is called thrombocytopenic purpura. At that time they [the doctors] told us that there was no option other than to amputate the legs and hand, or it was just [to] totally let him die, because there was no treatment to cure him at that time," explained Chucho's father, Luis.

Thrombocytopenic purpura is an immune disorder in which the blood doesn't clot properly. The condition is often referred to as ITP.

Despite all the adversity he has suffered, Chucho is adamant that nothing can hold him back. He only concentrates on giving his all, saying, "I seize the moment with my teammates and I always have to enjoy it as if it were the last game of my life, because we don't know when it will be the last day of life."

Chucho wasn't always so readilly accepted among his teammates. "At the beginning when he was younger, many teammates didn't want him around because he conceded lots of goals, but now this is over," revealed Chucho's father.

Things took a turn for the better about a year ago, when Chucho was accepted into a football school.

His coaches at Los Broncos de Metepec were seen overseeing training and giving him the opportunity to play on Wednesday. "We like to come here because teammates help him. They make it so that he feels good, they treat him as equal to the others," Luis stated.

In the video, Chucho can be seen athletically stopping potential goals and defying expectations to achieve his dream. Unfazed by the difficulties, he continuously keeps his eye on the ball and his dream. "Lots of kids dream of scoring the perfect goal, but I dream of stopping it," Chucho explains with a smile as wide as the goal he is defending.
