Global thrill-seekers test their limits during 'Baikal Ice Storm' race

Adventurers and thrill-seekers from various parts of the world flocked to the Siberian Lake Baikal for the international extreme individual race 'Baikal Ice Storm', which is an annual event held in late January to mid-February.

Footage shot on Sunday near the Listvianka village shows participants competing on the last day of the event. Some people prefer using skates with ski poles or a kicksled, while others choose to equip their bikes for ice cold conditions.

According to the event’s hosts, participants had arrived at Baikal from all over Russia and other countries.

The race is extreme due to several factors. The length of the distance which is 205 kilometres (127 miles) might be an obstacle itself. Also, low temperature and wind speed that reach up to 20 meters per second (65.6 ft/s) can be a challenge for many. Moreover, there are a lot of hindrances like ice cracks and reefs that competitors have to overcome.

"This is a long race, but it is nice, very beautiful," noted Pavel Signal, a rider from Prague.

Due to its severe conditions, some participants leave the race.

"As practice shows, 30 per cent of all participants are disqualified. Either they are not on time or they are unable to physically fulfil the task," stated the main referee of the event, Alexander Zhilinski.

Local EMERCOM units are there to start rescue operations in case of emergency and provide all necessary help immediately on the ice of Lake Baikal.
