Afghanistan: Disabled cricket tournament calls for ceasefire in Afghanistan

Afghanistan, Asadabad
February 17, 2020 at 16:24 GMT +00:00 · Published

Disabled cricket players joined a special three-day tournament in Asadabad in Afghanistan's Kunar province, to ask for a permanent ceasefire and end to violence in the country, on Monday.

The tournament, organised by the Kunar disabled cricket team, welcomed rivals from Nangarhar province for a friendly three-day tournament to raise awareness of the victims and impacts of war and to "call on both sides of the fight, the government and the Taliban, to announce a ceasefire and bring peace as soon as possible," said disabled cricket player, Tayib Safi.

"They should stop the war, I myself am a victim of this bloody war, we don't want our children and youths to be disabled like us," Safi added.

All of the players in the tournament were made disabled as a result of the violence Afghanistan has been subjected to, and they hope to spread a message through the most popular sport in the region.

Afghanistan has reportedly seen deadly fighting on the ground over the weekend between the Taliban and the Afghani government, despite reported peace talks between US and Taliban negotiators.
