Hong Kong: Over 300 Hongkongers to be evacuated from Diamond Princess cruise ship

Hong Kong health officials announced that they are preparing for the evacuation of Hongkongers aboard the stranded Diamond Princess cruise ship moored in the Japanese port of Yokohama, during a press conference in the city-state on Tuesday. The Hong Kong passengers will first be tested for the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, before boarding the plane.

"They all have to go through the test arranged by the Japanese authority to make sure it's done and it's negative. That's the first safeguard. And the second safeguard is before they board the plane, the Health Department colleagues will do another health check before they board the plane," said Under Secretary for Food and Health Dr Chui Tak-yi.

"So they will check their temperatures and also will ask for any symptoms. If they have any of these issues, like fever or symptoms, they will not be allowed to board the plane."

Chui Tak-yi assured that the government as well as the Health Authority "will make their best effort" to provide proper medical assistance and treatment, in case one of the Hongkongers presents symptoms of the virus.

There are purportedly 352 Hongkongers among the Diamond Princess passengers, who are expected to be repatriated on Wednesday.

The Diamond Princess Cruise Ship was quarantined when it arrived in Yokohama early last week after it emerged that some passengers who disembarked in Hong Kong last month tested positive for the flu-like respiratory illness. So far, 355 people from the ship have tested positive for the new virus that began in China, including 70 new cases found on Sunday.

According to reports, the novel coronavirus death toll tops 1,800, with more than 73,000 are infected worldwide.
