Afghanistan: Ashraf Ghani declared winner of presidential elections

Afghanistan's independent election commission said in Kabul on Tuesday, that President Ashraf Ghani won a second term as the country's president.

Ghani earned 923,592 votes - or 50.64 percent - in the election that took place last 28 September, said Independent Election Commission (IEC) head Hawa Alam Nuristani during a press briefing in the Afghan capital.

Ghani's challenger, Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, garnered 720,841 votes, or 39.52 percent.

On Tuesday, Abdullah reportedly contested the final results and vowed to create his own parallel government.
