It's raining energy - Scientists generate electricity from water droplets

A new, highly efficient droplet-based electricity generator (DEG) was developed by a team of scientists led by City University of Hong Kong (CityU) researchers and can light up 100 LED bulbs with one drop of water.

"Our work is about harvest the energy from water droplet, energy is fundamental to our life, our life and society are powered by energy, without energy, it's hard for us to imagine how our tomorrow will be," said Department of Mechanical Engineering professor Wang Zuankai. "When the droplet hits the surface, the droplet will spread, and connect to the source and drain, so as a result, we can get lots of power generation."

Footage shot on Wednesday in Hong Kong shows LED light bulbs lighting up in the dark as drops hit aluminium and indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes installed on a glass slide coated in Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

The generator's key feature a structure akin to a field-effect transistor (FET) which permits high efficiency energy-conversion that previous droplet-powered generator lacked.

The aim is to tackle the energy crisis and the FET-like structure increases the converted power density a thousandfold, bringing the possibility of sustainable water energy generation closer.
