Meet Luciano, the wheelchair-bound delivery guy navigating Sao Paulo’s streets

Brazil, Sao Paulo
February 20, 2020 at 14:20 GMT +00:00 · Published

Moving from one location to the other around the busiest streets of Sao Paulo, there's one guy making sure your food orders arrive on time, all the while doing his job in a wheelchair. Forty-four-year old Luciano Oliveira, who has made Brazil's biggest city his home after moving there from Salvador is overcoming disability caused by Polio in childhood to carve out a living for himself.

Footage filmed around the Paulista Avenue on Wednesday, shows Luciano gearing up to make his day's deliveries, making sure his gloves are on and checking his cell phone to track orders.

Having studied Public Policy, Olivera explained that he took on his current job in order to earn a salary and open doors to others in his position. But navigating the streets in a wheelchair also poses a number of challenges. "The biggest difficulty is urban mobility, directly or indirectly, sometimes if it's uphill, the distance where people live is the problem. Downhill, my concern sometimes is to go down and then how to go back up," Olivera said.

"The problem is when I get streets that remind me of the Iguazu Falls, then it is hard, you have to focus not to die or maybe not to damage people's cars," he stated.

So next time you are walking on the famous Paulista Avenue, don't forget to look out for Luciano - his next order might be just metres away from your route.
