Ukraine: Police detain protesters as dozens demonstrate against housing of Wuhan evacuees

Ukraine, Novye Sanzhary

Dozens of citizens from the village of Novye Sanzhary located in the central Poltava region on Thursday protested against the government's plan to use facilities there to accommodate Ukrainian evacuees from the Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicentre of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

The demonstrators attempted to block a highway leading to the village, resulting in police deploying armoured personnel carriers to unblock the road. Several people were detained during the protest, according to the police.

"In order to prevent any escalation of the conflict or threat to the health of citizens, I urge the protesters not to violate the law. All attempts to commit offenses will be stopped", said Ivan Vygovsky, head of the police of the Poltava region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy also commented on the issue on his Facebook page: "Unfortunately, not all of us can reacted humanely. Attempts to block routes, block hospitals, and prevent Ukrainian citizens from entering the country - this is far from showing the best side of our national character. Ukraine will not surrender its own people. This will be government policy - I guarantee it. But the same should be the reaction of society - I really hope so."

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry said in a statement that all of the Wuhan evacuees will be place under quarantine in the village of Novye Sanzhary.

The latest report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) says the novel coronavirus, officially called COVID-19, has claimed more than 2,000 lives and infected more than 75,000 people worldwide.
