Russia: Moscow remains in contact with Ankara over Idlib situation - Zakharova

Russia is in constant contact with Turkey over the situation in Syria's Idlib region, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said at her weekly briefing in Moscow on Thursday.

"With regards to contacts with our Turkish partners we have daily communication on the variety of issues, that includes our diplomats and military experts. So our communication is not interrupted."

Commenting on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's statement that the Syrian government troops in Idlib must pull back behind a line of Turkish observation poss by the end of February or risk being pushed back, the spokesperson said "I think that any worsening of the situation on the ground is not in our tradition as we prefer to act diplomatically."

"As for the statement that Syrian government and Syrian forces should do something on their land, we should not forget, first of all, that we are speaking about the sovereign state," she concluded.

Zakharova's comments come after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced on Wednesday that the two-day closed-door talks between Turkish and Russian officials aimed at de-escalation of tension in Idlib had finished unsuccessfully.

On the same day, President Erdogan told Turkish parliamentarians that a cross-border operation in Idlib province was "imminent."
