Iran: Tehran residents split over taking part in upcoming parliamentary election

As Iran prepares for parliamentary elections on Friday, Tehran residents appeared divided over whether to participate in the election at all.

"I will participate in the election and my request to authorities is to really be what they are saying," Tamimi from Tehran said, adding "I want them to follow up on people's problems, not just to inviting them to vote for them in the election."

Another citizen said that on the contrary, he won't cast his vote because he believes that lawmakers are appointed by Iran’s Guardian Council, the constitutional watchdog, rather than being elected by people.

"We have seen the qualified ones being chosen by the Guardian Council for the past 40 years, but its result it the current circumstances faced by our country," he explained.

The Iranian people will vote on February 21 to elect lawmakers for the 290-seat parliament.
