Syria: Moscow accuses Turkey of aiding militant offensive

Syrian Arab Republic, Syria
February 20, 2020 at 21:54 GMT +00:00 · Published

Head of the Russian Central Command and Control Center in the Syrian Arab Republic Sergey Zhmurin said on Thursday that the Russian Air Force launched strikes to repel a militant offensive with Turkey’s backing in Idlib.

“Militants launched several massive attacks using a large number of armoured vehicles against units of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the direction of Kminas-Nairab on February 20, 2020. The actions of the militants were supported by artillery fire of the Turkish armed forces, which allowed militants to break through the defences of the Syrian army,” Zhmurin said.

Zhmurin went on to say that “to prevent militants from moving deeper into Syrian territory, SU-24 aircraft of the Russian Air Force, at the request of the Syrian command, carried out airstrikes against the advancing armed terror groups. This allowed the Syrian troops to successfully repel all attacks.”

According to the official, four Syrian soldiers were injured. “We draw attention to the fact that this is not the first case of support for militants from Turkish armed forces. We urge the Turkish side to stop supporting the actions of militants and transferring weapons to them,” Zhurin concluded.

Turkey’s Defence Ministry announced that two Turkish soldiers were killed and five others injured in the air strikes.

Earlier on Thursday, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said "in the event of the slightest damage to our soldiers at observation points or elsewhere, starting from today, we will hit the regime forces everywhere without being bound by the borders of the Idlib and Sochi memorandum,” adding that Ankara was aiming to push Syrian government forces beyond Turkish observation posts in the province of Idlib.
