Ukraine: ‘Incredibly shameful’ – IntMin Avakov on attacks against Wuhan evacuees in Novye Sanzhary

Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov arrived at the village of Novye Sanzhary in the Poltava region on Thursday evening to calm down tensions over the government’s decision to accommodate people evacuated from the coronavirus-stricken city of Wuhan at a local sanatorium.

Speaking to the media during his visit, Avakov said it was “incredibly shameful” that some local protesters had attacked buses carrying the evacuees.

"I think these events are the worst disillusionment in my life. I am disappointed with the people, with the moral, which we saw here today,” the minister said.

Earlier on the day dozens of protesters attacked the Wuhan evacuees’ buses with stones. According to Ukraine’s national police, nine officers and one civilian was injured in the ensuing clashes.

The head of national police, Igor Klimenko, said at a briefing that 24 people had been detained during the protest.

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry announced on Thursday that all of the Wuhan evacuees, 45 Ukrainian and 27 foreign nationals, would be placed under quarantine for 14 days in the village of Novye Sanzhary.

Later on Thursday Health Minister Zoryana Skaletska announced on her Facebook page that she would be staying in the quarantine centre with the evacuees.

"I will be living with people from Wuhan for the next 14 days. In the same room, in the same conditions. I hope that my presence there will calm those in Novye Sanzhary and the rest of Ukraine," the post said.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy also commented on the issue on his Facebook page: "Unfortunately, not all of us can reacted humanely. Attempts to block routes, block hospitals, and prevent Ukrainian citizens from entering the country - this is far from showing the best side of our national character."

The latest report by the World Health Organisation says the novel coronavirus, called COVID-19, has claimed more than 2,200 lives and infected more than 76,000 people worldwide.
