Germany: Muslim community remembers Hanau shooting victims

Germany, Hanau
February 21, 2020 at 16:20 GMT +00:00 · Published

Members of the Muslim community commemorated nine victims of the shooting perpetrated by a far-right extremist earlier in the week, at the city’s DITIB (Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs) Mosque in Hanau on Friday.

President of Hanau DITIB Mosque Memduh Oendef said the whole community was deeply affected by the shooting and was "shocked." No one could have ever imagined that something like that can happen in Hanau where "over 104 nationalities live together," he added.

Oendef went on to stress that additional security measures have already been agreed with the police forces. "We also discussed with the police to have a police presence here during Friday prayers, at least for 15 or 20 minutes so people can see that there is some security and they feel better," he explained.

A gunman opened fire outside one shisha bar in the city's Heumarkt district and drove off to a second location in the Kesselstadt district where he opened fire again, killing nine people in total and injuring several others late on Wednesday evening.

The suspect was a 43-year-old German citizen from Hanau. Together with his 72-year-old mother, he was found dead at his home in the early hours of Thursday morning.

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer described the Hanau shooting as a "racially motivated terror attack" during a press conference in Berlin earlier on Friday.
