Germany: Greta Thunberg joins Hamburg 'Friday for Future' rally ahead of local elections

Germany, Hamburg
February 21, 2020 at 21:42 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thousands took to the streets of Hamburg demonstrating against climate change during a 'Friday for Future' rally, which was joined by Swedish student and environmental activist Greta Thunberg, two days before elections to the city-state parliament on Friday.

#HamburgVotesClimate was the hashtag for a day. Participants held banners reading sharp messages as "The snow must go on," "Climate is changing: why aren't we?" or "Forest of Vollhoefner: It won't work. Lumbered? #Voelliremains;" a forest with more than 20,000 trees about to be cleared for the construction of logistics halls, under a political last decision postponed until the now ongoing election.

"The people in power, the politicians and the media are still behaving as if everything was fine," said the young activist.

"It seems like they don't know this is threatening their own children and their future. And we, young people, we are school-striking because we are tired of constantly being left out," she remarked.

Thunberg added a message of hope to the demonstrators, saying: "You here today; you are the hope. And we must keep on pushing together. But we must remember that the changes required will not happen now. The politics needed do not exist today, because the changes required and the lack of awareness is so enormous."
