Italy: Suspected coronavirus spreader tested negative - investigations continue

Italy, Fiorenzuola
February 21, 2020 at 22:28 GMT +00:00 · Published

A person suspected to have spread the coronavirus in northern Italy and infected 'patient zero' tested negative for the deadly virus and investigations continue after the suspect's company closed as a precaution, according to a statement in Fiorenzuola by the town's Mayor Romeo Gandolfi on Friday.

"The 'number one' suspect who has contaminated the patient 'zero' hospitalised in Codogno, in reality resulted negative in a test for the virus. Therefore the alarm is coming back. Now the medical team is performing further analyses to the colleagues of the suspected subject. For security reasons the company was closed and the employees withdrawn to their homes, the controls are being continued as a precautionary measure. For now everything seems okay," said Gandolfi.

The mayor urged locals to keep calm as no actual health emergency can yet be declared after it was established there "have actually been no links between the patient and the suspect."

"We clearly breathe a sigh of relief. The ASL [local health company] rightly as per protocol, however, deepens the investigations, given that this company, the MAE has continuous relations with China having a branch in Shanghai."

A 38-year-old man, has been hospitalised in Codogno hospital. He headed to the hospital's emergency room with complaints of a fever after he apparently met several times with his friend who had returned from China. A friend of the hospitalised man was thought to have been a virus carrier albeit not showing any symptoms, but tested negative. Italian authorities announced further five infections, all of them in Lombardy and several of them linked to the 38-year-old man's case.

More than 75,450 people have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus in China alone, with a further 634 cases declared in over two dozen other countries. Eleven deaths have been confirmed outside of China, including in Iran, France, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines.
