Switzerland: GNA's Sarraj denounces 'war criminal Haftar' at UNHRC session in Geneva

февраль 24, 2020 at 20:49 GMT +00:00 · Published

Libyan Government of National Accord leader Fayez al-Sarraj denounced the attacks on the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and described the leader of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Khalifa Haftar as "a war criminal," in his speech during the 43rd session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), held in Geneva on Monday.

Sarraj said that "the random bombardment of the neighbourhoods, targeting civil airports, bombing hospitals and medical crews and the ambulances, targeting the infrastructure, children loss of right to education due to bombing and closure of schools, is caused by the aggressor and whoever supports them with money and arms." He added that "they should prosecuted for what they have committed against the people of Libya, of killing and destruction."

"Many have lost their lives, women, men, children and old people. Families have been displaced, children have been orphaned because of the aggression launched by the war criminal [Khalifa] Haftar," said Sarraj.

The GNA leader added that the "legitimate" government is ready to "moving forward in the path of national peace and stability," emphasising at the same time his refusal to the "proxy war which is being fought over the Libyan territories."

Running for 25 days, the session, which will discuss reports of human rights violations in Libya, will be the first session since the GNA re-joined the Human Rights Council last October.

Fighting has been taking place around the Libyan capital since the LNA, which controls much of Libya's east and parts of the south, first launched an offensive to gain control of Tripoli from the GNA in April 2019. The conflict eventually settled into a stalemate. At the Berlin conference on January 19, world leaders agreed on upholding a UN arms embargo and implementing a ceasefire in Libya.
