Spain: Guardiola's City deal Zidane blow before Barca blockbuster

Spain, Madrid
February 27, 2020 at 02:40 GMT +00:00 · Published

Two late goals saw Manchester City defeat Real Madrid in their Champions League first leg tie at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Real took the lead through Isco but City fought back thanks to a Gabriel Jesus strike before Kevin de Bruyne tucked away an 83rd minute penalty.

The result is a huge boost for Pep Guardiola's side in the face of a ban on their participation in UEFA competitions and he hailed de Bruyne for his calmness from the spot.

"A penalty under pressure is not easy, all the players who try, it’s incredible news. Finally we [missed] four penalties in a row, five out of six or seven, so it’s good for us to score this evening," he said.

Despite the result and performance, Guardiola will be hoping an injury sustained by defensive lynchpin Aymeric Laporte won't be too serious after the Frenchman was forced off, adding to his injury woes this season.

Zidane on the other hand will be ruing what could have been a famous win. A string of poor results have piled pressure on Real Madrid ahead of this Sunday's Clasico against Barcelona.

"We had a chance here today but we have another chance to change the game so we need know we need to go and win. On Sunday we have another opportunity," he said.
