Germany: Schools closed and supermarkets emptied amid COVID-19 cases in Heinsberg

Germany, Heinsberg
February 27, 2020 at 18:43 GMT +00:00 · Published

Schools were closed and supermarkets had shortages in the German city of Heinsberg following the confirmation of two new cases of coronavirus, including a woman who worked at a local daycare.

One of the local residents showed herself surprised by the way people have been reacting to the news of the virus in town and said, "So yesterday around midday I was shopping at Lidl, and I looked around and there were no more vegetables left, no more tomatoes, no more toilet paper all the potatoes and onions were gone. So I asked the shop attendance and he told me there were going to be more delivered tomorrow, so I asked him why aren't there any left? and he said: yeah corona (coronavirus). Is it just like the war times or what?"

Ozman Khan, a shop attendant at one of the supermarkets, talked about how they had not prepared for a scenario where people would start stockpiling by saying: "In the morning was somewhat quiet, but just after 8 or 9am you could start to feel the tension, people started to shop as if there was a special day or like a holiday. All the cupboards were empty, the eggs were gone, vegetables were gone, fruits, canned foods were gone, we had until today almost only empty cupboards because we didn't prepare for all this business."

According to the latest reports by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), at least 81,000 people have been infected by the COVID-19 so far and over 2,700 people have died.
