India: Protesters demand end to violence as citizenship law clashes continue

India, New Delhi
February 27, 2020 at 20:09 GMT +00:00 · Published

Protesters in New Delhi on Wednesday have demanded an end to the violence over the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Protesters gathered with signs calling for democracy could be seen, as a heavy police presence could be seen on several streets. Evidence of the recent riots and clashes between police and protesters could be seen in the form of burned cars and motorbikes. More cases of arson were ongoing, with emergency workers putting out a fire in the Bhajanpura district. Several shops in the Maujpur district were locked up, and a few had been looted.

One New Delhi resident said, "None of our Hindu brothers are fighting, these are all members of RSS [Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh] who are creating violence. We know that our Hindu brothers are not fighting, they with us." The RSS are a right-wing nationalist paramilitary volunteer organisation.

Protests have swept the country after the Indian Parliament passed the CAA on December 11, entitling religious minority migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan to Indian citizenship if they entered the country before the end of December 2014.

The amendment has come under criticism for discriminating against undocumented Muslim migrants. The NRC (National Register for Citizens) in turn, is used in Assam state to identify illegal immigrants with the government's goal to implement it throughout the country.
