South Korea: 'I'm afraid' - Seoul residents react to coronavirus outbreak

Korea, Republic of, Seoul
February 28, 2020 at 07:47 GMT +00:00 · Published

Seoul residents reacted to the coronavirus outbreak in their country, where there are more than 1,700 confirmed cases reported, making it the second highest infection count in the world after China.

Footage filmed on Thursday and Friday shows locals wearing masks shopping and taking public transportation, as well as businesses selling hand sanitizers and masks.

"I've just been staying at home. I came out today [for the first time] in a long time. Private institutes are closed now and the opening day of the school term is delayed," said one resident, before adding "I'm afraid of the coronavirus."

"I have business meetings in Middle East, Asia and South East Asia, but I cannot go out abroad. Koreans are not allowed to enter those countries. That is really serious," said another local.

According to reports, 13 people died from the coronavirus - also known as COVID-19 - in South Korea.

A large part of the reported cases was traced back to the Shincheonji Church of Jesus in Daegu. Some 212,000 members of the secretive religious movement will hence be tested for the flu-like virus.
