Russia: Putin discusses Idlib with Security Council after Turkish soldiers killed in airstrike

Russian President Vladimir Putin chaired an extraordinary Security Council meeting on the Idlib situation in Moscow on Thursday, following escalating tensions in the Syrian province after 33 Turkish soldiers were killed in an airstrike.

According to the Kremlin, the members “expressed extreme concern over the sharp escalation of the situation in this region of Syria, provoked by terrorist groups that intensified offensive operations against the Syrian army.”

The Kremlin statement added that “the tragic cases when Turkish soldiers lost their lives occurred during the terrorists’ offensive operations. It was pointed out that Turkish military personnel was not supposed to be anywhere outside their observation posts in Idlib.”

The Security Council members expressed hope that Turkish authorities will do everything in their power to make sure Russian civilians and official bodies are safe in Turkey.
