Iran: Workers seen disinfecting Tehran taxi rank amid COVID-19 response

Taxis, streets and benches were sanitised and disinfected in Tehran on Thursday to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, which has reportedly infected over 3,000 Iranians and claimed the lives of at least 92.

Footage shows a group of workers in hazmat suits and respiratory masks disinfecting curbs, benches, street signs, utility poles, taxis and buses in and around a taxi rank in the Iranian capital.

"Since the day that this virus began to spread in our city, and on the orders of our dear mayor of Tehran, we started an operation of disinfection. Last week, we disinfected the BRT stations of Damavand street and the entrances of metro stations as the inside the metro is outside of our responsibility, and the metro organisation itself does it. Actually, we conducted the operation for places that many people might use and touch the surfaces," said Abbas Mafi, Deputy of Environmental Services of the Municipality of District 7.

Deputy of the Firefighting Operations in District 6, Yadollah Maddadi, added, "This disinfection operation, which is done by the firefighting organisation, could calm people and could mitigate the psychological atmosphere that has been established and people would feel calm. They actually feel that there are those who care about people's health. The firefighting organisations, through different groups, have begun to clean the city in each district and this operation will continue until the end of the next month."
