Italy: Brescia hospital struggles to keep up with increase in severe coronavirus cases

Brescia's Poliambulanza hospital has seen an increase of its intensive care capacity from 16 beds to 90 beds, as the coronavirus cases in Italy continue to skyrocket. Doctor Giuseppe Natalini, Director of the Multifunctional Intensive Care Unit, explained on Friday how medics had to develop new ways of treating and coping with the ever-growing number of patients.

"Our hospital is at the forefront in many aspects of treatment and intensive therapy. We suddenly found ourselves having to invent new treatments and using machinery we would have never used in usual conditions," said Dr. Natalini.

"Some patients manage to recover in a relatively quick time. We managed to send some of them home after one week, those who had a very favourable recovery. On the other hand, others have had a catastrophic one, whereby after the first three to four days, unfortunately, they died," he said.

"Around two thirds of the patients have very long hospitalisation time at the intensive care unit, and this leads to a constant increase in the number of beds because the amount of hospitalisations is always superior to the discharges, as many patients need to stay hospitalised for longer," he added.

"As for me, I spend everyday between 13 and 14 hours here at the hospital. My colleagues have tripled the amount of duty and night shifts compared to what they usually in order to manage to treat all the patients that we are having here," said Dr. Natalini.

On Friday, Italy reported its highest COVID-19 death toll to date, with over 900 deaths. In addition, Italian news reported a total of 86,498 coronavirus cases in the country, with 9,134 deaths and 10,950 recovered, as of Friday evening.
