Match made online - See quarantined Russian couple hold virtual wedding ceremony

Russian Federation, Ufa
April 04, 2020 at 18:51 GMT +00:00 · Published

A couple from the Russian city of Ufa decided not to wait for the end of quarantine before getting married, and instead held the wedding ceremony via videoconference on Saturday.

Lily and Vakhit, the bride and groom, said "I do" in March, and planned to hold a ceremony with their friends and families later. When the COVID-19 crisis came to Russia and ruined their plans, the couple decided to gather their close ones together on the web instead.

Footage shows the newlyweds as well as friends and parents sitting at their monitors in their apartments with tables set. The couple were wearing gowns and the “guests” prepared masks to put on during the event.

The celebration featured traditional Russian wedding contests, such as the first-born game. At many traditional weddings there are two bags offered to each guest to put money into: a baby boy bag and a baby girl bag. The bag with more money wins and the first born gender is “predicted” this way. Vakhit and Lily’s unusual wedding had no bags, but credit cards to vote. “If you would like it to be a girl, send the money to the bride, and if a boy – send the money to the groom. If you would like them to have twins – send your money to me,” the wedding attendant said as he oversaw the ceremony from his home computer.

According to the newlyweds, this was the first online wedding in the Bashkortostan region.
