Afghanistan: Border with Pakistan temporarily reopens for Afghans stranded amid coronavirus closure

Afghanistan, Torkham border crossing

Two major border crossings between Afghanistan and Pakistan temporarily reopened on Monday, allowing stranded Afghan citizens to return home. Pakistan had closed its border in a bid to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Footage filmed at the Torkham border crossing - which has reopened for three days - on Monday, shows the stranded Afghans waiting in line, before being screened by doctors. Those who were sick were placed in a quarantine camp, where they are set to stay for at least 14 days.

"All these people who returned from Pakistan, they should spend 14 days in quarantine here at a camp. No one will leave the camp before the 14 days. After 14 days of quarantine if their test is negative then they can go to their houses, or if their test shows any symptoms of COVID-19, they should spend another 21 days in quarantine," explained a border official.

An Afghan man said that he will be placed in quarantine, as he got into a vehicle: "I'm ill, my kidney is not well, I have tests certificates with me. I spent 34 days in Peshawar, Pakistan, but now I should go back in quarantine, because I don't have any other choice. These others passengers are also ill."

According to reports, around thousands of passengers were trapped in Pakistan when the cross point closed, after travelling there for medical treatments.
