Germany: Customers flock to Berlin street market despite COVID-19 outbreak

A weekly market in Berlin's Kreuzberg neighbourhood was crowded on Tuesday, despite social distancing measures put in place due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Many shoppers could be seen wearing face masks, while trying to maintain distance between each other.

"Yes, I feel a little unsafe, however, what can I do? I live here, I am in the middle of this, when I walk out my door I always come to this market. So I am used to that now, but still a little sceptical," said a resident named Nicolaj.

Another resident named Olga said that "I try [to maintain distance] when I can, but right now you are not able to."

A German government spokesperson said on Monday that it is "absolutely necessary to maintain all rules" regarding the restrictions on public and private life in order to see a reduction in the coronavirus infection rate.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced in March strict coronavirus measures which forbid more than two people meeting together, with the restrictions set to last until at least April 20.

According to figures compiled by John Hopkins University, there are over 104,000 coronavirus cases in Germany, while over 1,800 people confirmed to have had the virus have died, as of Tuesday.
