Japan: Tokyo streets nearly deserted as gov't declares state of emergency

Tokyo's streets and landmakers were less crowded than usual on Tuesday, as the government declared a state of emergency for the capital city and other prefectures, in a bid to counter the spread of the coronavirus.

Footage shot at the usually bustling Shibuya and Shinjuku districts, shows them lacking the usual crowds and traffic jam, as the capital was preparing to enter a month-long state of emergency on Tuesday, along with six other prefectures.

According to the authorities, the state of emergency measures will help minimise person-to-person contact, with locals urged to stay at home, except for grocery shopping, seeking medical care, doing a daily exercise and going to work if necessary.

Japan was among the first countries outside China to report cases of coronavirus, but the virus seemed to be spreading slowly until recent weeks. As of Tuesday, the country has nearly 4,000 confirmed cases, which have doubled in a week, while 92 people have died after testing positive from the disease.
