Italian authorities announced on Tuesday that they were investigating the country's largest nursing home, Milan's Pio Albergo Trivulzio facility, after 70 residents died last month amid of allegations that management downplayed the risk of coronavirus infection and misattributed causes of death.

One nurse spoke outside the facility saying "The situation isn't good. They've covered everything up."

"They are making us work without protection. We don't know if we are infected or healthy, we don't know how many inside are infected," she added.

A relative of a patient being treated at the hospital on the site said, "When I initially came here, my father was being treated at another facility. I already couldn't go inside, they were taking precautions. Here, they are letting everyone inside."

Last month, a total of 70 patients died at the facility and another 30 since the beginning of April, prompting an investigation from the prosecutor's office in Milan, with the Italian health ministry also set to send investigators to the home.

According to management at the Milan home, which has over 1,000 residents, coronavirus testing wasn't available for its ill inhabitants and the facility followed health care recommendations. In addition they said that the number of deaths at the facility was in line with figures from last year.

Italy is one of the worst-hit countries in Europe with over 135,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and the highest death toll in the world with 17,000 people having died with the virus as of Tuesday.
