Spain: IFEMA COVID-19 field hospital firing on all cylinders

A field hospital installed at the IFEMA exhibition site in Madrid is fully operational for patients with coronavirus, with footage seen inside the facility on Tuesday.

Doctors, nurses and other healthcare personnel are attending to patients with COVID-19 in the 5,500-bed facility due to the saturation of hospitals in Madrid.

Although most of the patients are moderately ill, last week the first beds in the Intensive Care Units installed at the field hospital began to fill up.

Veronica Real Martinez, Director of Nursing at the IFEMA field hospital, explained that the first moments at the facility were "a situation of uncertainty, of lack of control" due to "the fact that inside a pavilion that is normally a convention hall, a hospital would have to be set up from one day to the next.”

Now, however, "there are patients who have come here who, if they had been at the door of [another] hospital, since they have been saturated, would not even have had the opportunity to receive treatment, so here many of them even verbalise that they are in a 'luxury hotel,'" she said.

According to Spain’s Ministry of Health, the disease has caused a total of 13,798 deaths in Spain since the beginning of the epidemic, and 140,510 positive cases have been recorded. There are currently 63,093 people hospitalised, 7,069 of them in intensive care, while 43,208 have been released from hospital.
