Spain: Town stays coronavirus-free by implementing 'disinfection carwash' and tight lockdown

Spain, Zahara de la Sierra

Zahara de La Sierra is not an island, but it's managing to keep zero cases and symptoms of the coronavirus in what is now the country with the second most positive cases in the world.

Footage shows the 1,400-inhabitant town of Southern Spain on Wednesday.

Mayor Santiago Galvan separated Zahara de La Sierra from the rest of Spain on March 14, the day the central government declared state of emergency. Since then, only one road kept the town connected to the rest of Andalucia, and all the cars that come in have to go through a disinfection carwash.

"What they are doing here is great, all the cars come in disinfected from the virus," says Juan Jimenez, a local resident.

"From the first day we put out a delivery service absolutely free for everybody to avoid gatherings in the shops, and people are using it so we see few people out on the streets. We also blocked all access to town to prevent and ensure the confinement," explains the mayor Galvan.

Zahara de La Sierra is on lockdown, as the rest of the country, and every Monday and Thursday at 17:30 (16:30 GMT) a group of 10 people disinfect all the streets and squares of the idyllic pueblo.

As of Wednesday, Spain tallied more than 152,000 positive COVID-19 cases and 15,238 deaths, according to the country's Ministry of Health.
