Belarus, Brest
April 09, 2020 at 13:34 GMT +00:00 · Published

Dozens of mannequin fans along with 813 real spectators witnessed home team Dinamo Brest beat Shakhter Soligorsk 2-0 in the first-leg of the Belarusian Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

Fans from several countries, including the UK, Russia, Iran, the UAE, and Uzbekistan paid 67 Belarusian roubles (€24.5, $26.7) to have their picture stuck to cardboard mannequins, which were dressed in jerseys of some of the world’s biggest football clubs.

The “virtual fan” campaign will continue in Dinamo’s next home game. Part of the proceeds from the sale of virtual receipts will be used to combat the coronavirus in Belarus, Dinamo Brest said in a statement.

Belarus is the only country in Europe where professional football hasn’t been suspended yet due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The country has registered 1,331 coronavirus cases as of April 9. Sixteen people have died of COVID-19 in Belarus, according to official figures.
