USA: Businesses near Floyd demonstration looted while police use tear gas on protesters

United States, Minneapolis
May 28, 2020 at 10:21 GMT -00:00 · Published

Police used tear gas to disperse protesters, while businesses were looted near the demonstration, in Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon, decrying the death of George Floyd, who died after an altercation with police.

Protesters were gathered on the ground waving 'Black Lives Matter' placards and chanting for peace while police fired tear gas and rubber bullets down on them from above a tall building. Local businesses also had their windows shattered, while people can be seen leaving with carts full of goods.

The tensions started after a 46-year-old African American died after one of the police officers knelt on his neck for nearly 10 minutes on Monday while he was saying "I can't breathe." George Floyd died shortly after the encounter after being transported to hospital. The four officers involved in the incident have been fired.

Floyd's case echoes that of Eric Garner, who died by strangulation as the result of a chokehold by a police officer in New York City, in 2014. Garner could also be heard saying "I can't breathe" in the video of the incident.

Garner's case, along with many others, including Michael Brown, who was fatally shot by police in Ferguson in 2014, and Trayvon Martin, fatally shot in 2013 by George Zimmerman, a private citizen who was acquitted on all charges, helped inspire the Black Lives Matter movement, which calls attention to the deaths of unarmed African-American men and women, rarely resulting in criminal convictions.
