USA: Louisville protests against law enforcement as nationwide outrage increases

United States, Louisville, Kentucky
May 29, 2020 at 13:29 GMT -00:00 · Published

Protests over heavy-handed law enforcement spread to Louisville, Kentucky late on Thursday night, where seven people were reportedly struck by gunfire.

Footage shows protesters attempting to overturn a Louisville Metro Police vehicle in front of the Jefferson County Clerk building. Louisville Metro Police department confirmed that no officers were among those injured, adding that it was too early to determine who was responsible for the gunshots.

Tensions in Louisville continued to escalate as the city had been mourning the fatal shooting of a black woman by three white police officers in March. The officers have since been placed on administrative leave but have not been charged with a crime.

After the tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on Monday, protesters in Louisville returned to the streets. Mr. Floyd, a 46-year-old unarmed black man, was recorded pleading with the officers with his final words, saying "I can't breathe" and "don't kill me." Mr. Chauvin, the policeman who forcefully kneeled on the victim's neck in the George Floyd case, was fired along with the three other officers involved in the altercation.
