USA: Tanker truck drives into crowd of George Floyd protesters in Minneapolis

United States, Minneapolis
June 1, 2020 at 03:26 GMT -00:00 · Published

A tanker truck sped at a crowd of people protesting the killing of George Floyd along a Minneapolis motorway on Sunday.

The tanker could be seen parked across the motorway, where hundreds of protesters were gathered.

While the driver was hospitalised with non-critical wounds after being beaten by protesters who dragged him from his vehicle, no other injuries were reported.

"We were all literally sitting or kneeling. And this truck just came through blaring its horns. I saw people like literally was so close to being hit by the truck," protester Shelia Daniels recounted.

"The first two cop cars that came up, one of them came out with a bat and started swinging at us, one came out with mace. They went after the protesters before they went after the guy," said protesters Henry Yapan and Christian Soyer.

The driver was arrested with Minnesota's highway patrol agency tweeting that the incident appeared to be deliberate.

Protests and demonstrations have taken place across the world, having begun in the US in reaction to Floyd's death, with riots and looting also occurring in some areas.

Floyd, a Houston native, died in Minneapolis earlier this week after a police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes as he was recorded saying, "I can't breathe" and "Don't kill me."

Four officers involved in the incident have since been fired. The officer who knelt on Floyd was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday.
