USA: 'Violence was taught' - Washington protest dissolves into fires and looting

Black Lives Matter protesters took over Lafayette Square near the White House on Sunday evening demanding an end to "racism" and "injustice," despite police attempting to enforce a curfew.

The protest unravelled into unrest, with several perpetrators setting vehicles on fire, and starting fires in revolving door entrances. Some protesters could be seen holding signs reading "Black Lives Matter" and shouting "Don't shoot, don't shoot," in reference to George Floyd's death last week.

Black Lives Matter activist Aryana Evans said that although she wanted the protest to be peaceful and that "looting is counterproductive at this moment," she does "think there is a necessary place for it."

"Violence was taught to us by the people that brought us here," she said referring to slavery and colonialism.

Floyd, a Houston native, died in Minneapolis on May 25 after a police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes as he was recorded saying, "I can't breathe" and "Don't kill me."

Four officers involved in the incident have since been fired. The officer who knelt on Floyd was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday.
