USA: 'We're tired' - Portland protesters unite against police brutality and racism

United States, Portland

Thousands of people took to the streets of Portland on Sunday, protesting the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week.

Protesters marched from Laurelhurst Park towards downtown, kneeling and chanting "Black lives matter" outside a police station on East Burnside Street.

"If they had started with arresting the four officers and convicting them with murder, four murder charges, none of this would be taking place," said protester Alexis Lawrence.

"America, we're tired. Everyone says, 'everybody matters,' but like they said, everybody doesn't matter if black lives don't matter," said protester Ericka Thomason.

Protesters also gathered in front of the Multnomah County Justice Center, telling police officers to "take a knee."

Protests and demonstrations have taken place across the US in reaction to Floyd's death, with riots and looting also occurring in some areas, including Minneapolis.

Floyd, a Houston native, died in Minneapolis on May 25 after a police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes as he was recorded saying, "I can't breathe" and "Don't kill me."

Four officers involved in the incident have since been fired. The officer who knelt on Floyd was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday.
