Cool Runnings - Jamaican bobsleigh team trains by pushing Mini during lockdown in UK

Two members of the Jamaican bobsleigh team have been preparing for the next Winter Olympics by pushing a Mini Cooper through the residential streets of Peterborough during the coronavirus lockdown.

In scenes reminiscent of Disney's 1993 film "Cool Runnings," Nimroy Turgott and Shanwayne Stephens have been pushing a Mini Cooper to train their push-start. In the film, the four members of the Jamaican bobsleigh team push a Volkswagen Beetle down the hills and through the streets of Kingston, Jamaica.

"So, after we flew back from racing in Innsbruck, the country, obviously, or the world, went into lockdown. We got stranded, all the gyms and facilities and stuff got closed. So, we had to sort of come up with our own ways of continuing off-season training, explained Stephens on Monday.

"We normally have resistance training where we do pushes with prowlers and stuff, we didn't have any access to any of those so we had to come up with our own sort of way to replicate that training. So, we thought, why not go out and push a car? And that's how this sort of story came about really," Stephens went on to say.

Nimroy Turgott normally lives in Jamaica, but has been staying with Stephens since January, as the pair had planned to train through the summer in Britain. The team is aiming to qualify for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

"We are very determined and we are focused on our goal. That's how we came up with this beautiful plan of pushing a car. because we missed the last Olympics by one spot and we're using that disappointment as our motivation going forward," stated Turgott.
