USA: 60 arrested as 2,000 peaceful protesters defy curfew in NYC

At least 60 arrests were made after thousands of protesters took to the street in the ninth day of protests over the killing of George Floyd.

The protest was largely peaceful, after the third day of curfew was enforced. The curfew officially begins at 20:00 local time, but officers allowed protesters to stay until 21:00, according to Chief of Police Terence Monahan.

"They have to be off the street. At 8 o'clock curfew, we gave them to 9 o'clock, and there was no indication that they were going to leave these streets. This area has been hurt enough," he said, adding that officers were permitted to "take people out," if they "start violating the law."

Officers could be seen forcefully tackling protesters to the ground. At least one protester resisted arrest and attempted to flee from police officers. Monahan confirmed that 60 arrests had been made, for curfew violation.

The death of Houston native Floyd on May 25 sparked a wave of worldwide protests, with riots and looting also occurring in some areas.

Floyd died in Minneapolis on May 25 after a police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes as he was recorded saying, "I can't breathe" and "Don't kill me."

Four officers involved in the incident have since been fired. The officer who knelt on Floyd was arrested and charged with murder and manslaughter.
