USA: Dozens arrested in Manhattan as BLM protesters defy curfew

United States, New York City
June 6, 2020 at 03:57 GMT -00:00 · Published

Dozens of protesters were arrested for violating an overnight curfew in downtown New York City on Friday as the demonstrations over George Floyd's death continued after sunset.

A largely enforced New York Police Department (NYPD) division was seen cordoning the area on Park Avenue near East 81st Street, on Manhattan's Upper East Side, while several officers conducting arrests.

The detained protesters who defied the curfew shouted 'Black lives matter' slogan while being carried by officers to police vans.

New York City Mayor, Bill de Blasio introduced the curfew beginning from 20:00 after the massive riots and looting during the nationwide Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests.

Over the past night, the NYPD arrested at least 270 people in relation to the protests, the city officials said on Friday.

Protests sparked by George Floyd's death at the hands of police in Minneapolis have been taking place since May 26 in the US and around the world.

George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was killed during an arrest in Minneapolis on Monday, May 25, after officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes despite Floyd saying he couldn't breathe.
