USA: Police turn to 'kettling' on peaceful protesters, arresting dozens in Brooklyn

United States, New York City
June 6, 2020 at 10:57 GMT -00:00 · Published

Around 50 people were arrested after riot police surrounded a peaceful march of protesters returning home after the 8 PM (00.00 GMT) curfew in Brooklyn on Friday.

Protesters were seen peacefully walking through Brooklyn after New York City's 8 PM curfew. Police reportedly first told protesters that if they stayed on the sidewalk they would be allowed to pass.

Police were then seen 'kettling', or containing, protesters and arresting them one by one. The arrests occurred at the intersection between Nostrand Avenue and Montgomery Street, near Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighbourhood, at around 08.45 PM on Friday (00.45 GMT).

Among those detained was healthcare worker Courtney Taylor, who said the protest had been peaceful, adding, "We were told that if we walk on the sidewalks we would be able to go home. We walked on the sidewalks, what do they do, they lined up and they're locking everybody up."

"My ancestors fought for this sh*t, okay? They got whipped for this sh*t. This is nothing. This is not going to stop me. I'm going to be back here until we get justice for George [Floyd], Sandra [Bland], Ahmad [Aubry], Oscar [Grant], everybody. Justice," she added, mentioning names of police brutality victims.

Protests sparked by George Floyd's death at the hands of police in Minneapolis have been taking place since May 26 in the US and around the world.

George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was killed during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25, after officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes despite Floyd saying he couldn't breathe.

The four officers charged in Floyd's death have since been fired and arrested.
