Berlin's Tierpark Zoo welcomes new baby giraffe named Henri

Germany, Berlin
June 18, 2020 at 18:08 GMT -00:00 · Published

Henri, a new-born giraffe of the endangered Rothschild's subspecies, caught his first tastes of public admiration at Berlin's Tierpark Zoo, wooing camera-wielding visitors as he socialised with family and other herd members.

The baby male giraffe was born on June 5, and made his first shy steps just last Tuesday on the grass of the zoo's outdoor savannah-style enclosure, accompanied by his 6 year-old mother Amalka.

"He spent his first day with his mother in their little box so that they could build a connection. And after that he spent some days with the other small giraffes, particularly with his sister Bella who is one and a half years old. To meet Henri was something very new for her," said Dr. Florian Sicks, who manages giraffes at the zoo.

The 13-day-old long-necked offspring is already more than 2 metres (6.56 ft) tall and weighs over 60 kilograms (132 pounds). Henri's name was selected among hundreds of proposed variants, after Tierpark zoo, together with Howoge Housing Association, sent an open call on social media to help choose the name for the baby giraffe.

Rothschild's giraffes, also known as the Uganda giraffe, are a critically endangered species, with less than 2,000 remaining in the wild, mostly in protected parks in Kenya and Uganda.
