Russia: Citizens ‘freely expressed their will’ on constitutional amendments - CEC’s Pamfilova

Russian citizens "freely expressed their will" during country’s constitutional amendments vote, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Russia Ella Pamfilova said in Moscow on Wednesday.

"I would like to thank all Russian citizens who considered this civil mission very important for them. They read the amendments, contemplated and thought about that, then they came [at the voting stations] or otherwise expressed their will. Thank you all. They freely expressed their will, as they see fit," she stated.

Only four violations were registered during the voting process, Pamfilova added, however, she said this number was "negligible in comparison with the total number of voting stations and the number of participants' ballots that determine the results of voting."

"There were no complaints requiring consideration at the CEC session. At this point, there are no such complaints. Also I would like to mention that we are taking measures to prevent double voting. As I’ve said before, all participant lists will be verified and compared to each other," she added.

According to the latest data published by the CEC, over 76 percent of voters support constitutional amendments after half of the ballots had been counted.

The proposed amendments include banning important officials from having foreign citizenship and restricting all future presidents' time in office to a total of two terms. The reforms would also reset the terms already served by President Putin, allowing him to run again for a fifth term in 2024, potentially staying in power until 2036.
