Russia: ‘Many vital amendments’ – Russians on nationwide vote

Russians from Kazan, Moscow, Kaliningrad, and Yekaterinburg talked about their hopes and expressed their opinions a day after the nationwide vote of the constitutional amendments ended, Thursday.

“There are many vital amendments that will influence our lives positively, so to say,” a man from Kaliningrad said. “Usually changes are for the good,” a woman from Kazan hoped.

There were others who questioned what’s going to happen next. “I don’t think anything would change drastically, because some amendments were already put in laws or bylaws. Now all of this is in one book, that’s it,” woman from Kaliningrad said. Sergei Vorobyov from Yekaterinburg thought about the distant future. “I believe our grandchildren would need a good constitution, to make the state strong. How it would be used is a different topic,” he said.

Citizens who could vote, but didn’t do that described their reasons. “I didn’t take part in a nationwide vote, I was going to and I wanted, but I decided the pandemic still hasn’t ended. A crowded place, so why to? Kindergartens are closed, why would I go to vote?” Nina Khvatova from Yekaterinburg said. The Muscovite Natalia added, “You know, I’m not interested in politics. I believe everything’s decided for us."

The nationwide vote on constitutional amendments began on June 25 and finished on July 1. The amendments range from better pensions and minimum wages to a reset of term limits that would allow President Vladimir Putin to run again for the fifth time in 2024, potentially staying in power until 2036.

As the Central Election Commission reports, about 77,92% of voters supported the amendments. The final results will be released on Friday.
