Turkey: Saudi suspects go on trial in absentia for Khashoggi killing in Istanbul

Twenty Saudi officials suspected of involvement in the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi went on trial in absentia at an Istanbul court on Friday.

The former fiancee of Jamal Khashoggi, Hatice Cengiz, attended the first day of trial and spoke outside the building.

"We believe in Turkish justice; we, unfortunately, cannot answer your questions now because the judicial process started. However, we will be seeking justice in both Turkey and everyplace that we can do. Cengiz, outside of the Istanbul Justice Palace in the city's Sisli district.

The 20 individuals have been indicted by Turkish prosecutors for involvement with the killing, which is believed to have taken place inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul nearly two years ago in October 2018.

Agnes Callamard, a Special Rapporteur for the United Nations Council of Human Rights and renowned human rights expert, was also in attendance, saying that the trial sends "a very strong message to dictators" regarding extrajudicial killings.

"Today is important. Why? Because we are moving into a formal space. We are leaving the media, we are leaving the UN, we're moving into the space of justice. The Saudi process was anything but justice. This was a travesty of justice in my opinion," she added.

Saudi Arabian courts reportedly sentenced five people to death over the murders in December 2019, but never revealed their identities.

Callamard and others involved with the case allege there is evidence that Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's crown prince, took part in planning the killing.
