Jordan: Protesters decry Israel's annexation plans outside of US embassy in Amman

Hundreds of protesters denounced the Israeli government's plans to annex parts of the West Bank on Friday, days after the move was expected to be put in motion.

Waving Palestinian flags and caricatures of US President Donald Trump, the demonstrators voiced their opposition to the plans put forward by the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which were set to begin on Wednesday but were subsequently delayed .

"The annexation decision is an extension of the 'Deal of the Century.' We will not forget that the projects that targeted the Palestinian issue will not be finished and will not be stopped from the day of the announcement of the Sykes-Picot agreement," said Naim Jabaer, Chairman of Jerusalem Committee in the Islamic Action Front Party.

Netanyahu's coalition partner, and Israel's Alternate Prime Minister, Benny Gantz called for the annexation to be delayed earlier in the week as he urged that the country first deal with the coronavirus crisis.

While the decision on annexation has yet to come, many suspect that Netanyahu is awaiting confirmation of support from his US counterpart, whose son-in-law Jared Kushner was a key figure in devising the so-called 'Deal of the Century' peace plan for the region.

The annexation plans have been condemned by the UN, and the EU, as well as several Arab states and international organisations.

Several million residents of Jordan are either Palestinian refugees or Jordanian citizens of Palestinian origin.
